Baez Marks Wimbledon Debut with a Win

Baez, who is better known as a clay court player, was making his main draw debut at Wimbledon against the Japanese player, Taro Daniel, the world number 118.

But in a match held over from Monday because of the weather, he showed no signs of being overwhelmed by his surroundings.

Although both men squandered break opportunities in the first set, it was the Japanese who was the first to drop his serve. He had three break back points next game, could not take any of them, and Baez eventually claimed the set.

Two early breaks put Baez in control of the second set. Daniel recovered one of them, but he could not claw back the deficit.

The third set saw the two men swap breaks, but Taro dropped his serve once more, giving Baez the chance to serve for the match. He did not waste the opportunity.

Goffin Eases into Second Round

Three years ago Goffin reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon – emulating his best performance in a Grand Slam – and he made a comfortable start to his latest campaign with a straightforward win over the Moldovan qualifier, Radu Albot, the world 113.

The Belgian made a strong start, breaking Albot in his opening service game. One more break confirmed his control of the first set.

It was Goffin who was the first to drop his serve in the second set, but he broke back immediately and then twice more as he extended his advantage.

Albot threatened a comeback when he was two breaks to the good in the third set. But he let the advantage slip, surrendering one of the breaks, and then the other.

It eventually went to a tie break where Goffin had four match points. There of them came and went, but the Belgian made the fourth one count.

Baez v Goffin Prediction and Tip

Playing on grass has not disconcerted Baez if the evidence of his match against Daniel is a anything to go by. Goffin also had a comfortable win and he is a past quarter-finalist here which could be an advantage. All the signs are that it should be a close match, but Baez may just edge it.
