Zhang Shuai v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, with one of them having come in the qualifiers of the 2021 Eastbourne International and Kostyuk has won both times in three sets.

Shuai Tames Doi in Opener

Shuai has shown the kind of form in recent times that has not been on offer otherwise from her stable and she continued with that in her opener against Misaki Doi.

The Chinese player came away a 6-4, 6-0 winner in a little over an hour, sweeping past her opponent after having made bit of a slow start to the encounter.

After the two players traded breaks of serves, it took Shuai until the seventh game to break Doi again and take the initiative and a 5-3 lead. The next game Doi won, the ninth of the set, was the last one for her as Shuai ran through the next seven in a row to complete the victory.

Having come into this year’s Wimbledon on the back of a quarterfinal appearance at the Nottingham Open and then having reached her second grass court final at Birmingham.

Kostyuk Overturns Strong Swan Start

Kostyuk was a 2/5 favourite going into her opening round match against Katie Swan but she struggled to get off to a strong start against the local player.

The world number 76 was on court for over two hours and lost the initial advantage of being 2-0 up in the opening set to Swan. Swan broke back in the sixth game, resisted two break-points in the ninth before breaking Kostyuk yet again to take the set.

It was her fitness issues that made things difficult for Swan and brought Kostyuk back into the encounter. An exchange of breaks in the second was followed by Kostyuk taking control with another one in the ninth game and she broke again in the opening game of the third to finish off the encounter.

Kostyuk will know she would need to do a lot better against the in-form Shuai but with that kind of a win-loss record against the Chinese player, she does hold an advantage.

Shuai v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

While Kostyuk starts off a bookmakers’ favourite here at 7/10, we are backing Shuai to edge her out because of her good form.

Tip: Shuai to win: 6/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
