Wang Upsets Bencic
Qiang Wang delivered one of the first upsets of the tournament by knocking out the in-form Swiss, number 14 seed Belinda Bencic.
It was a two-day affair with their match starting late on Monday and then carried forward to Tuesday for the conclusion. Bencic may argue that the loss in momentum hindered her form as Wang won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
In all fairness, however, the Swiss was way out of touch – she committed 45 unforced errors to Wang’s 18.
Nonetheless, a win is a win and this puts the Chinese into round two at Wimbledon – a feat she has achieved just twice in her career.
The 30-year-old has had a rocky spell in 2022 with a tally of 15-13 and a singles ranking as World No. 140. Most of Qiang’s season has ended in early losses, except for the Guadalajara Open and Monterrey Open, where she reached the concluding rounds.
As for her pedigree, she has not won a singles title since September 2018 while last year, she reached just one final.

Watson, in a Similar Boat
Heather Watson, age 30, finds herself in a similar boat as Wang, navigating the same rocky tide. Her year too is mired with disappointing losses, which can be summarised in her tally of 15-17.
She is now World No. 121 and arrived in London on the back of a round two exit to Viktorija Golubic in Nottingham and a first-round loss to Rebecca Marino in Eastbourne.
But on Monday and Tuesday, Watson rallied on the support of the crowd to survive a tough challenge from the German Tamara Korpatsch by beating her 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-2.
Heather has not made it past this stage in her last two Grand Slams and the same may happen this time too. That said, she has a good pedigree in the tournament having won the mixed doubles edition in 2016 and reaching the final the following year.
Wang v Watson Prediction and Tip
The match can swing either way but Wang has a slightly better chance of winning this one. However, she will need to survive the crowd that is rallying against her and a possibly spirited Watson. In either case, expect an entertaining match.
