Zverev v Chardy Head to Head
The two players have met each other no less than three times already on the tour. Zverev leads 2-1 although, their last encounter took place in 2017 ATP Munich. The German won that match comfortably in straight sets with 6-4, 6-4.
Chardy’s Rocky Start in Melbourne
Jeremy Chardy started his campaign in Melbourne against his compatriot Ugo Humbert. In what turned out to be one of the longest matches of the competition so far, Chardy emerged victorious in five demanding sets. He booked his place in the second round with 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(10) in four hours and nine minutes.
With that win, the World No. 36 has surpassed his previous year’s result in Melbourne when he lost in the first round.
Despite that gruelling, hard-earned victory over Humbert, Chardy began his 2019 season on a highly convincing note. He participated in the Brisbane International where he made it as far as the semifinal before losing to Kei Nishikori.
As for his performance in the season behind us, he spent most of his time trying to make it past the early rounds on the circuit. He had success only on a few instances, most notable of which were the ATP Istanbul and ATP ‘S-Hertogenbosch, where she was a semifinalist and a runner-up respectively.
Zverev’s Flawless Performance in the Opener
It took Alexander Zverev just an hour and 56 minutes to defeat his first-round adversary Aljaz Bedene. It was a straight set victory for the German, who won that match 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, on the back of 35 winners and 11 aces. He also maintained his first service win rate at an impressive 85%.
Zverev, who is now being coached by Ivan Lendl, last played in a professional tournament back in 2018. It was the year-end ATP World Tour Finals, which he won successfully after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. Along with that title, he also won the Madrid Masters and the Washington Open.
The young German was absolutely brilliant in 2018 and was a constant part of the top 5. Under the guidance of Lendl now, he can very well go the distance and lift a Grand Slam trophy.
Zverev v Chardy – Who Will Win?
Chardy is far more experienced that Zverev and while he has delivered some interesting results over the years, it is hard to imagine him topple the fourth seed here. Zverev should be able to win this one in straight sets.
