Rybakina Sends Lucky Loser Vandeweghe Packing

No. 17 seed Elena Rybakina advanced to the second round of Wimbledon with a straight sets win over lucky loser CoCo Vandeweghe in the first round on Tuesday.

Rybakina faced nine break points in the match, and yet she saved all of them, while converting the only one she held to win the one-hour-and-39-minute contest 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.

The Kazakh struck 27 winners, including 12 aces, while her opponent  hit 28 winners, including 8 aces. Rybakina, however, made 12 fewer unforced errors than her opponent’s 38.

Rybakina, who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon on her debut last year, had a 1-2 season record on grass prior to this tournament. The win improves the 23-year-old’s overall season record to 22-12. She was a finalist at Adelaide International-1 and a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells, but hasn’t reached the last eight of any of the other tournaments.

The Kazakh is a very good grass court player and has an overall record of 16-7 on the surface, including qualifying matches. She will be hoping to go deep in this year’s event.

Andreescu Registers an Easy Win

World No. 56 Bianca Andreescu had come into the tournament in excellent form and she started off her campaign in style, brushing aside American qualifier Emina Bektas in just 55 minutes.

The Canadian, who was a finalist in the previous tournament in Bad Homburg, improved her grass court record to 5-2 in 2022. Overall she is 12-6 this year, having missed out the entire first quarter

Dominating the proceedings from the start against the World no. 224, Andreescu broke the American thrice to take the fist set. In the second, Bektas did come back from a break down, but Andreescu restored the advantage the very next game to score a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The win was Andreescu’s maiden victory at Wimbledon after she lost the opening round matches in 2017 and 2021.
