Petra Martic took an hour and 51 minutes to beat 30th seed Shelby Rogers in Round 1 on Tuesday. The Croatian, ranked No. 80, is into the second round at Wimbledon for the seventh time in her career.
Playing in the main draw for the 10th time, Martic made a solid start, converting three of five break points, while getting broken just once to take the first set with ease.
The American showed more resistance in the second set as both players exchanged two breaks before Martic edged the tiebreak for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Martic, who has made it to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon twice, was 0-2 from her two grass court events in the lead-up to the major. She was a quarterfinalist at Indian Wells and improved her season record to 16-12 following Tuesday’s win.

Kucova Overcomes Tough Start v Pigossi
Kristina Kucova, who made her main draw debut at Wimbledon in 2009, is playing in the tournament for just the third time, and just like the previous two occasions, the Slovakian has once again reached the second round.
The World no. 91 began her campaign on Tuesday with a solid performance against Brazil’s Laura Pigossi.
In a tough first set, Kucova failed to close out the set despite being 5-2 ahead. Pigossi made a valiant attempt to come back into the contest, but Kucova broke for a fourth time in the set in the 11th game before holding on to take the opening set.
While it was a neck-and-neck first set, the second set was completely one-sided with the Slovakian bageling the World No. 124 to sail into the second round.
Kucova needed an hour and 17 minutes for the 7-5, 6-0 victory. She converted seven of nine break points and saved half of the six that she faced.
This was Kucova’s just eighth win of the season from 15th match, which includes qualifying rounds. It will be interesting to see if she can keep the winning run going.
