Gauff Scrapes Past Ruse
It wasn’t an easy start for French Open finalist Coco Gauff, but the 18-year-old still managed to scrape past Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the opening round on Tuesday.
The American held as many as 25 break points in the match, but she converted just four of them, which was just about enough to beat Ruse 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and 29 minutes.
Ruse, too, broke Gauff four times in the match, but three of them came in the first set which she dominated.
Both players hit 21 winners in the match, but it was Gauff who made 30 fewer unforced errors than Ruse’s 56. While it may have been a scrappy start for the World No. 12, she will be happy to have survived the first round test. She has reached the fourth round on both her previous appearances at Wimbledon and will be looking to go even deeper this year.
She improved her overall season record to 24-12 and is 4-1 on grass having made it to the semis in Berlin in the lead-up to Wimbledon.

Buzarnescu Breezes Past Schunk
World no. 127 Mihaela Buzarnescu breezed past German qualifier Nastasja Mariana Schunk in the first round on Tuesday.
The Romanian made a fast start, building a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve. Although the German pulled one back but she couldn’t find another break in the set allowing Buzarnescu to take a one-set lead.
The Romanian continued to dictate term in the second set. She dropped just five points on her serve, didn’t face a single break point but converted two of four break points that she held to win the match 6-4, 6-2.
The 34-year-old Buzarnescu is making her fourth main draw appearance at Wimbledon and this is the third time she has gone past the opening round. A win in the next match will equal her tournament best achieved in 2018. But for that to happen she will have to cause a huge upset on Thursday.

Gauff is the overwhelming favourite in this contest. Expect her to advance with a straight sets win.
