Garin was supposed to take on Matteo Berrettini in his first round match, with his opponent being one of the pre-tournament favourites behind Novak Djokovic. At the 11th hour, the Italian number one had to withdraw from the competition after testing positive for Covid-19.
And as a result of that, Berrettini’s place in the draw was taken by Elias Ymer, a lucky loser.
Ymer did what he could, put on a brave front in patches but in the end, Garin looked far too well-prepared to have any of that despite having lost three in a row before this.
The Chilean player registered a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 victory, his first on grass since reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, and will now have a chance to make round three of the competition as he takes on another lucky loser.

Grenier Makes Good Use of Lucky Loser Tag
There were five lucky losers in the men’s singles first draw and Grenier became the only one to win his opening round match and carve out a place in the last 64.
In doing so, Grenier has won his maiden Grand Slam main draw match, overcoming fellow qualifier Marc-Andrea Hüsler in a gruelling five sets that lasted nearly four hours.
Grenier, who had gone down to Jack Sock in his final qualifier, lost a two sets to love lead to Husler, but then edged past his opponent 6-4 in the final set to carve out the shock victory.
Earlier this year, Grenier had played his first ever grass court match at a competitive level – it came at the Ilkley Challenger where he won his opener and then fell in the second.
