Minnen Routs Muguruza in Shocking Opener

Sure Garbine Muguruza hasn’t been in much of a form this season. But it’s not like Minnen’s form heading into Wimbledon had been too exemplary either.

In fact, Minnen had played four grass court matches before the start of this Wimbledon season and won just one, an expected win over a struggling Misaki Doi at bad Homburg.

Which is why, coming into her opener against Muguruza, Minnen was a whopping 7/2 to win it – and win it she did.

What makes the result even more shocking, probably one of the biggest shocks of the first round is the manner in which Minnen disposed off Muguruza. She needed a mere one hour and two minutes to get through, winning 6-4, 6-0.

This was after Minnen had failed to serve out the first set at 5-3 and then broke Muguruza four times in a row to wrap up the encounter.

With this win, Minnen has already displayed her best showing at Wimbledon. Can she win another to emulate her best Grand Slam showing that had come last year at the US Open?

Qinwen Overturns Her Grass Form

She is just 19 years of age and had never played a match on grass before this year. Not at any competitive level or qualifiers.

Which is why, despite her ranking and having gone into her first two matches on this surface at Berlin and Eastbourne as odds on favourite to win them, Qinwen failed to win even a set in them. Alycia Parks and Magdalena Frech got the better of her in those two.

Coming into Wimbledon, Qinwen was 6/5 against Sloane Stephens to get past her and that’s exactly what she did to win her maiden grass court match. It was her first win at Wimbledon, obviously, but follows on from a second round appearance at Australian Open and fourth round at French Open.

This, in her first year participating in Grand Slam tennis, is already a solid achievement.

Can she now make it two in a row especially against a player who has had her own issues on grass this year?

Minnen v Qinwen Prediction and Tip

This could lead to a keen tussle between the two players, both of whom don’t have the greatest credentials on grass. Giving the younger Qinwen the edge here.
