As we head into the second week of Wimbledon, the visibility on who might lift the Wimbledon 2022 Women’s Singles should have become clearer, but after one week of tennis there are more questions than answers.
Last year’s Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty had retired earlier this year which meant there was no defending champion in the draw this time. The void left by the former world number 1 has quickly been filled with the attention the last month’s French Open winner, Iga Swiatek has drawn here in Wimbledon.
With her second round victory over lucky loser Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, Swiatek recorded a 37 win on the trot, tying the longest winning streak women’s tennis in 32 years. It is an incredible achievement and she shares this feat with legend Martina Hingis.
The Polish superstar and world number 1 is the current favourite to lift the Wimbledon title. She has an extremely well rounded game which allows her to dominate on all courts.
Quite notably, Swiatek had also won the 2018 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion.

Jabeur Has Her Eyes On The Grand Slam
Last year’s quarterfinalist Ons Jabeur is the second favourite to lift the prestigious title at the All England Lawn Club. She is the current world number two with a 33-9 record on all surfaces this year.
Her significant runs this year include winning the Madrid Masters and reaching the final of the Italian Open where she lost to Iga Swiatek.
At this moment, Jabeur is on a 9 match winning streak on grass. She won the WTA Berlin title on the build up to Wimbledon and has reached the round of 16 quite comfortably without dropping a set.
What could give her the edge in this Grand Slam is her exceptional net game. The drop shots she plays are probably the best a drop shot can be played and on grass it is gold. She has looked the best player at Wimbledon as of now and as the draw is set, the most probable final will be Swiatek vs Jabeur.
If the Tunisian wins, she will lift her first career Grand Slam and will also be the first African player to do so.

Zheng the Dark Horse?
19 year old Qinwen Zheng is 66/1 odds on to win the Wimbledon championships. The Chinese star has had a meteoric rise in the rankings over the past 18 months. She ended calendar year 2020 ranked 287 and on June 13, 2022 she clocked 46 in the WTA rankings.
Zheng has a well rounded game, similar to Iga Swiatek. She is strong off both wings, can serve good and comes to the net to finish points.
In the Roland Garros last month, she took the first set against Swiatek in a round of 16 match but only managed to win 2 games since then. She complained about cramps after the match. The week after the French Open, Zheng lifted the WTA 125k title in Valencia on clay.
Zheng is a player who can out serve and hit through top ranked players. Her second round victory over Simona Halep in the French Open showed her point construction ability is world class and has the power to break through the strongest of defence.
She has started off extremely well and could be an unseeded finalist in a Grand Slam since Emma Raducanu spectacularly won the US Open last year.

Notable Mentions
2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has paired up with Patrick Mouratoglou in a bid to win her second Wimbledon crown, however she hasn’t been able to show glimpses of her prime form. But with players of such caliber, they should never be written off.
2022 French Open runner up Cori Coco Gauff had burst into the scene in 2019 as a 16 year old who had reached the round of 16 having first gone through the qualifying draw. With her big serving ability, she is also a strong favourite to win the title where it all begun for her.
Both Halep and Gauff are 9/1 odds to lift this title.
