Petra Martic v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

It’s 1-0 to Rybakina, she won their last meeting in the semifinal of the 2020 WTA Dubai in straight-set tiebreaks.

Rybakina Hits her Stride in London

It has been a lopsided season for the Kazakh No. 1, world number 23 Elena Rybakina.

Since reaching the final in Adelaide International, her form took a slight hit on account of health concerns. She failed to deliver in the early tournaments and it wasn’t until the American swing that we saw some semblance of rhythm in Rybakina’s game.

It was still erratic as the quarterfinal run in Indian Wells was followed by a litany of early exits in Miami, Charleston, and Stuttgart. Across the big clay events in Madrid, Rome, and Paris, Elena made it as far as round three.

It was the same story on grass as she lost to Shelby Rogers in Den Bosch and Lesia Tsurenko in Eastbourne.

At Wimbledon, where anything and everything goes, the number 17 seed has done well to turn her recent rut around. The 23-year-old carved a handful of impressive victories against Coco Vandeweghe, resurgent Canadian Bianca Andreescu, and Qinwen Zheng – all in straight sets.

As a former #12 (hitting that ranking only in January this season), Rybakina will fancy her chances of going further.

Martic Upsets Pegula

World No. 80 Petra Martic was on a four-match losing streak before arriving at the SW19. She lost her first-round bouts in Paris, Birmingham, and Eastbourne – respectively to the likes of Katerina Siniakova, Aleksandra Krunic, and Jodie Burrage.

So clearly, it may seem a bit surprising to see the Croat make it this far – especially after overcoming Shelby Rogers, Kristina Kucova, and the eighth seed Jessica Pegula – all in straight sets.

Well, it is not like Martic has not got the potential. She is a former World No. 14 with over $6.5 million in prize money. The only hindrance is a lack of consistency and form. Case in point, her last singles final came in September 2019.

Her previous best results of the season came in Indian Wells (quarterfinal) and round three in the Italian Open (as a qualifier). Petra has also beaten a few top 10 players in her career and being seven years elder to Rybakina, she obviously has the benefit of experience.

Martic v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

Rybakina is the odds-on favourite but Martic is well-primed to keep her run going. Expect a tight affair that can likely swing either way.
