The women’s draw at the Wimbledon 2022 has turned into an intriguing affair with a lot of the contenders in with a chance to win the title come Saturday, July 9. Here’s a look at who can win the 2022 Wimbledon title with a few of the fourth round matches still to go.
We are in the end game at the SW19 and all but five of the top 32 seeds have been dumped out. Iga Swiatek and Anett Kontaveit are out, in-form Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia could not continue her grass form in London while former champions like Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova also bit the dust early.
So the inevitable question now remains – who can win the Wimbledon title this year?
Mentioned below are our top takes on this.
Jabeur in Line for Maiden Grand Slam Crown
Number three seed Ons Jabeur has got a crystal clear path to the final event in Wimbledon 2022. She has been nothing short of brilliant as she swept aside her competition without really losing a sweat.
In the opening few matches, she dispatched the likes of Mirjam Bjorklund 6-1, 6-3, Katarzyna Kawa 6-4, 6-0, and Diane Parry 6-2, 6-3. In round four, she met with some resistance from the 24th seed Elise Mertens but managed to subdue her 7-6(9), 6-4.
A run like this has been long in the making for Ons. She cracked the top 10 this season to become World No. 2 with an incredible tally of 30-9 and two titles – the German Open in Berlin on grass and the Madrid Open. Apart from this, Jabeur was a runner-up in Rome and Charleston too.
Over these tournaments, the 27-year-old has built her form beautifully by carving big-ticket wins over players like Belinda Bencic, Coco Gauff, Daria Kasatkina, Maria Sakkari, Simona Halep, and Kvitova. Every match has prepared her for a moment like this.
Taking this into account, it is only reasonable to expect that she will sail through in the quarters against Marie Bouzkova. Quite likely, it will follow with the quick work of Jule Niemeier or Tatjana Maria. Compared to Jabeur, these two players are nowhere close to her level of play.

Can Halep Recreate Old Magic?
Former world number one and 2019 champion Simona Halep has got a tricky path to the final. But if she continues to keep her rhythm, there is no reason why she cannot make it.
After all, in what has been a largely whirlwind 15 months for the Romanian, it would be good to see her cap it all off with another major.
Halep was out of action for most of last season due to injuries; she dropped down in the rankings and at one point, lost her love for the sport. But ever since she started working with Patrick Mouratoglou in the coaching department, there has been an appreciable change in her play.
Bit by bit, Simona is making progress. She reached the semifinal in her last two grass events in Birmingham and Bad Homburg. In London, she has kept the momentum going.
Yet to drop a set, her victims include Karolina Muchova, Kirsten Flipkens, and Magdalena Frech. However, in the next couple of matches, she will play Paula Badosa, possibly followed by Amanda Anisimova in the quarters.
Now that World No. 18 is slowly regaining her former glory, it is not too much of a stretch to imagine her beating these players with ease. She has done so repeatedly in the past and is also well experienced when compared to the others in her bracket. Halep is on the verge of a breakthrough run here.

Elena Rybakina, the Dark Horse?
World No. 23 Elena Rybakina makes for a surprising addition to our list of potential Wimbledon 2022 Women’s Singles Champion. But there is a good reason for it.
The 22-year-old, who peaked at the #12 spot only this January, has been preparing for a Grand Slam breakthrough for quite some time. Her previous best result was reaching the same stage in Paris last season.
While the Kazakh started the year on a blazing note with a runner-up feat in Adelaide 500, she dropped out of the next few tournaments due to health concerns. It wasn’t until the Indian Wells that she got going with a quarterfinal stint – but she hasn’t been able to build some consistency to her game.
This was the case until last week when she reached the fourth round in London by beating Coco Vandeweghe, Bianca Andreescu, and Qinwen Zheng.
Should she overcome Petra Martic, she will meet the winner of the Alize Cornet-Ajla Tomljanovic bout – likely followed by Halep in the semis.
In her bracket, at least among the players remaining, Elena seems well-equipped and is experienced to take on any of these players. Let’s not forget that she made it to five WTA finals in 2020 and has a healthy resume against several top 10 players on the tour – better than everyone else but Halep.

Honourable Mentions
Granted that there are a few names like Paula Badosa or Amanda Anisimova who may also warrant inclusion in the list. However, we don’t see them going the distance this year in London.
Badosa is still unproven on grass and her current performance – although impressive – is not convincing enough. While she did surpass Petra Kvitova in straight sets in round three, the Spaniard is likely to face a bigger challenge in Halep and thereon. However, should she manage to upset the Romanian, Badosa becomes the new heavy favourite.
Similarly, Anisimova has been brilliant too but the 20-year-old has still got ways to go. A good chunk of her 2022 defeats has come against more experienced players than her – including Halep, Jelena Ostapenko, and Jabeur. She is also not immune from shock losses, thus giving her opponents a solid precedent.
