Nadal Prevails In the Unthinkable

22-time major champion Rafael Nadal has won both the majors this year thus far and has his eyes on a third consecutive major title that would set him up for the calendar slam going into Flushing, New York next month.

In his first two rounds against Francisco Cerundulo and Ricardo Berankis, the Spaniard was off to a strong start winning the first two sets each time but then wobbled a little and lost the third before coming back to wrap up in four sets.

Nadal looked more assured in his round of 32 match against Lorenzo Sonego as well as the fourth round against Botic van de Zandschulp, but had moments where he let go off the reigns in the third set only to come back soon thereafter.

Up against the in-form American Taylor Fritz in the quarters, Nadal was off to a strong start breaking early but Fritz broke back twice in the first set to close 6-3, playing smooth grass court tennis.

The Spaniard was up a break in the second but was broken back for 3-3, right around when he began showing signs of discomfort around the abdomen.

With his serve and movement compromised, it was evident that he was hurting and it was looking doubtful that he would be able to complete the match.

However, the second seed defied all odds to break back at 6-5 and close the set leveling the match.

The powerful Fritz game continued as he broke in the third and with clinical serving took a two set to one lead.

No one was able to hold serve in the fourth with four breaks of serve early, but Nadal hung on having adapted his game to his physical condition closing the set 7-5 for a decider.

Both players served at a high-level to take the set to 3-3 , but when Nadal broke the American, one wondered if the match was headed for the obvious result at the time.

However, the American broke right back and the match headed for a super tiebreak.

It was all Nadal early in the breaker going up 5-0 and although Fritz fought back to get to 3-5, the 22-time champion close the tiebreak 10-4 recording one of the most improbable wins of recent times.

Focussed Kyrgios In First Major Semi

Aussie Nick Kyrgios has been at his focused best this fortnight and the results are showing.

After a good showing on the grass at Halle, and a precautionary withdrawal at Mallorca, he has looked solid here at the Championships.

It was a dramatic third round battle against Stefanos Tsitsipas that saw him make the round of 16 where he was up against American Brandon Nakashima, where the Aussie was pushed to five sets, but upped the ante when needed and prevailed for his second Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Playing first time major quarter-finalist from Chile, Cristain Garin, Kyrgios did not get off to the best of starts as he was broken early in the first set.

However, the Aussie was resilient and broke back to level at 3-3 and then broke soon thereafter to win the set 6-4.

The clinical showing by Kyrgios continued as he broke twice in the second set to close the set 6-3 and looked all set for a first even major semi-final.

Garin was not going away without a fight and pushed the Aussie on his serve in the third set, but the big Kyrgios game always came to the rescue.

With the match heading into a tiebreak, the Aussie’s serve was bound to be crucial and so it was as he clinched the breaker 7-5 and secured a spot in the final four for the first time in a Grand Slam.

Nadal v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

An unexpected yet blockbuster semi-final awaits us at the All England Championships.  The outcome of the match is largely dependent on Nadal’s physical condition, which currently looks questionable.

Assuming Nadal is cleared to play, it is unlikely that he will be at his best and the Aussie looks extremely focussed at the moment and at his best on the grass.

Expect Kyrgios to prevail in a four-setter.
