Novak Djokovic is just one match away from winning his seventh Wimbledon title, fourth in a row and 21st Grand Slam trophy.

Standing in his way is a first-timer but not one who would be cowed down by the occasion, an Aussie who answers to the name of Nick Kyrgios.

Interestingly, despite Djokovic’s unbelievable credentials as a tennis player, he has never beaten Kyrgios, a statistic which has been a great sense of pride for the Aussie and a source of needle to go with it.

Last year, Kyrgios had called Djokovic a tool, and then pointed out the Serb cannot be called an all-time greatest player having never beaten the Aussie in their two previous meetings. Having said that, both those matches had come in 2017 and they haven’t played since, primarily because Kyrgios hasn’t done well enough at Grand Slams to get to the later stages.

Now he has, benefitted in some ways from his semifinal walkover from Rafael Nadal.

At the same time, it must be quickly added that the way Kyrgios has gone about his business all tournament, it might not have been beyond him to overcome Nadal on grass. Whether he would have been able to defeat Nadal and Djokovic in back to back encounters is a debate for another day.

A well-rested and an unusually focussed Kygios could make for an interesting opponent for this final.

Djokovic, on the other hand, hasn’t looked like he has been at his best but at the same time, has managed to up his game when needed.

Like his match against Jannik Sinner where he came back from a two-set deficit to move on and then overcoming an arrhythmic start against Cameron Norrie in the semifinal to win it in four.

He would know that against a fired-up and laser-focussed Kyrgios with a lot of the crowd behind his opponent, things could get tedious if he didn’t start off well.

The world number three will still start off a favourite – he is 3/10 to win this after being 2/10 to win the previous year’s final against Matteo Berrettini – but can he live up to those odds here?
