Berdych Looks to Continue Strong 2019
Czech Tomas Berdych, a 2010 Wimbledon finalist, continued his strong return from a long injury layoff, with a comfortable win against Dutchman Robin Haase, in the second round of the Australian Open. Berdych has only lost 15 games in his first two rounds at the Open.
Prior to the Australian Open, Berdych was the runner-up to Roberto Bautista Agut, at the ATP 250 in Doha.
Berdych’s strong serve and smooth forehand, along with steady play at the net, have all been on display in the first two rounds. The Czech made the quarter finals last year, at the Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Roger Federer.
His ranking has taken a tumble, having fallen to 57th in the world at the moment, but these good performances show a potential for a lot more of the good things in 2019.
Berdych’s next opponent is 18th seed Argentine Diego Schwartzman
Tireless Schwartzman Aims for Round of 16
Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who had a successful last 18 months on the tour, has thus far been challenged in both his first and second round matches. Schwartzman survived an epic five setter in the second round against American Dennis Kudla.
The Argentine has spent considerably more time on the courts in the first two rounds than his Czech Opponent.
Schwartzman will be looking to repeat, and better his 2018 performance in Melbourne, where he made the round of 16. A clay court specialist, with a strong return game, and a good mover on the court, Schwartzman will look to challenge the Berdych serve early and get a hold on the match.
Berdych v Schwartzman Head to Head
The pair have never met on the ATP circuit. it promises to be a match between the big Berdych serve and the strong Schwartzman return.
Berdych v Schwartzman – Who Will Win?
Berdych has been in good form and will look to back his serve with strong court play. While Schwartzman has the return and court coverage to challenge any of the big servers, Berdych has been in strong form, and the surface should suit his playing style. Expect Berdych to win in three or four sets.
