Carreno Busta Sends Wawrinka Packing
World No. 18 Pablo Carreno Busta knocked out former world no. 3 Stan Wawrinka in the opening round in Bastad on Monday.
Carreno Busta withstood 10 aces from the Swiss who won 90% points on his first serve. But the former didn’t face a single break point and got a break in each set to win the one hour and 25 minute contest 7-5, 6-4.
The win ended the 31-year-old’s three-match losing streak, which began with a quarterfinal loss in Halle. He was forced to pull out of his first round match at Wimbledon against Dusan Lajovic after he sustained an injury. Both players had won a set each when the Spaniard decided to retire.
On clay, Carreno Busta had reached the Barcelona Open final this year, finishing runner-up to Caros Alcaraz. Since then the former World No. 10 had won just one match on the surface, winning his opening round match in Rome.
Having returned to winning ways, Carreno Busta will be aiming to reach a third quarterfinal in Bastad with a win on Wednesday.

Ramos-Vinolas Knocks Out Qualifier Etcheverry
2016 champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas improved to 14-6 in Bastad with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the opening round.
Ramos-Vinolas saved 4 of 6 break points and converted all five that he held to beat the Argentine 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 39 minutes.
The 34-year-old, ranked no. 38th in the world, won his fourth career title with a win in Cordoba earlier this year. He was also a semifinalist in Santiago and Estoril but hasn’t had much success elsewhere.
Tuesday’s win over the qualifier was just his second win in his last nine matches (seven of which have been played on his preferred clay).
Ramos-Vinolas will be hoping to reach a sixth quarterfinal. He had won the title in 2016 by beating Fernando Verdasco in the final. He was also a semifinalist in 2019.
Carreno Busta v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip
Carreno Busta is the fifth seed and has never lost to Ramos-Vinolas on clay. He will look to keep that record intact in Bastad, but Ramos-Vinolas can be a tough player to beat on the surface. So expect a good fight with Carreno Busta advancing.
