Potapova Knocks Out Third Seed Begu
Anastasia Potapova reached her third quarterfinal of the season with a straight sets win over third seed Irina-Camelia Begu.
The Russian, ranked No. 79 in the world, overcame a 0-3 start to take the first set. She won five consecutive games to close the opening set and then won four consecutive games to start the second. After losing nine games in a row, Begu finally won a game, but she couldn’t find a way to break Poapova’s serve, who closed out the one-hour-40-minute contest 6-4, 6-2.
Potapova had begun the tournament by beating Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
The last time when Potapova had reached the last eight stage it was in Istanbul in April, where she went all the way to claim her maiden WTA title by beating Veronika Kudermetova in the final.
She has improved to 14-5 on clay this season (including qualifiers and lower level events) and will be looking to improve that record in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Niemeier Reaches Back-to-Back Quarters
Jule Niemeier has backed up her Wimbledon performance with a run to a second straight quarterfinal in Lausanne.
The 22-year-old German, who was a surprise quarterfinalist in the third major of the year, needed an hour and 16 minutes to beat compatriot Eva Lys 6-4, 6-2 in the second round on Thursday.
Niemeier saved 4 of 5 break points and converted all four break points that she held to dispatch the qualifier ranked No. 217.
Niemeier had needed three sets to beat Switzerland’s Ylena In-Albon 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 in over two hours and 40 minutes in the opening round.
Thursday’s win improved the World No. 109 to 32-15 overall and 20-5 on clay (across levels). She won the WTA 125 in Makarska in Croatia and an ITF event in Zagreb to win two clay court events this year. Can she inch closer to a third with a win on Friday?
