Gritty Thiem Showing Old Signs

He has been far from his best but Thiem looks to have finally taken those first few steps towards getting there.

After a gruelling three-set win over Emil Ruusuvuori, Thiem needed another three to get past Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut in the second round in Bastad to win successive matches for the first time Madrid in 2021, last May.

Thiem came through 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4 to seal his last eight berth and set up a meeting with Baez.

In match lasting two hours and 41 minutes, Thiem was broken one more time than his opponent and yet, a fighting first set tie-breaker victory ensured he did not have to suffer the consequences of that discrepancy.

Bautista-Agut blew a 5-2 lead in the first set to lose the tie-breaker than followed, but looked to have come back with a vengeance as he broke Thiem twice in the second to level the scoreline.

In the final set, Thiem held his nerve – and serve – to complete the win after breaking Bautista-Agut in the fifth game.

Can Thiem now make it three in three?

Baez Flying on Clay

It has been that kind of a season for Baez as he has steadily grown on the rankings chart and in confidence to rise to his current, career-best ranking of 34th in the world.

And featuring in this competition for the first time in his career, Baez registered his second successive straight-set win to move into the quarterfinals – the sixth time he has done that on clay this year.

Baez, who had registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Fabio Fognini in his opening round encounter at Bastad, crushed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 6-3 in the second to seal his last eight berth.

He needed just an hour and 21 minutes, broke his opponent thrice and brushed aside both the break-points he faced with ease to register his win.

Can he now deliver that same showing against a former Grand Slam winner and a player who loves his time on clay?

Thiem v Baez Prediction and Tip

Thiem might have won back to back matches for the first time since May 2021, but that isn’t giving him the favourites rights here. It’s Baez who is 1/2 to win this and we will have to go with that with Thiem having to endure a much more difficult workload than he has had in recent times.
