Two days after scoring a come-from-behind win in the first round, World no. 13 Belinda Bencic scored a straight sets win over fellow Swiss Susan Bandecchi to reach the quarterfinals in Lausanne.
The second seed, who had needed two hours and 20 minutes to beat France’s Diane Parry 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round, needed just an hour and 20 minutes to beat Bandecchi 6-3, 6-4 in the second round on Thursday.
Bencic got the lone break of the first set in the second game. She was also the first to break in the seventh game of the second set, only to see her opponent break back immediately. But Bencic restored the advantage in the ninth game and held on to the lead to close out the match.
The 25-year-old, who made a shock first round exit at Wimbledon, will be playing in her seventh quarterfinal this year. Bencic won the title in Charleston and was a runner-up in Berlin. She was also a semifinalist in Miami, while has been beaten in the last eight stage thrice. With the top seed Danielle Collins knocked out, she is the favourite to win the title in Lausanne.

Martic Continues to Dominate
After brushing aside fifth seed Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the opening round, Petra Martic handed Russian qualifier Erika Andreeva a straight sets drubbing on Wednesday.
The World No. 85, who broke Parrizas-Diaz five times while getting broken just once during a 6-2, 6-2 win in the first round, didn’t face a single break point in the second round. Martic got the only break of the first set in the ninth game and then broke the Russian twice in the second set for a 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 30 minutes.
The 31-year-old Croatian, who made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon, will be featuring in just her second quarterfinal this year. She was beaten by Simona Halep in the last eight stage in Indian Wells.
It will be interesting to see if she can reach a first semifinal since the Italian Open last year.
