John Isner v Maxime Cressy Head to Head
They played once before. It was this year at the Australian Open and Cressy won 3-2.

John Isner faced a very solid test in Benjamin Bonzi in the Newport quarterfinal and he had some issues against him. The way Bonzi plays tennis usually wins him matches but here it really backfired as Isner was patient enough.
Isner was the first player to lose his serve but he was able to battle back because Bonzi does not think too much when he plays. It’s attacking all the time and his game is one that serves up a lot of unforced errors. The French player dropped that opening set but rallied from 3-6 down in the 2nd set tiebreak to win it.
The 3rd set tiebreak was once again won by Isner but generally, it was a match where Isner showed he’s vulnerable. Dominating at Newport is the usual way for him but it seems like age is catching up with him a bit. It certainly looked like that at times here and Cressy will have a decent chance to win this one.
It’s a solid year for Isner with a 17-13 record and a 4-1 record on grass which should make this one a pretty competitive matchup.

Cressy Cruising
The rise of Maxime Cressy keeps on giving as the American player simply keeps working and it’s showing on the court. His breakout this year has been spectacular and it’s good for tennis because there are not players committed to playing serve and volley as much as he is in the top 100.
It’s working well for him with a 25-19 record with 9-4 on the grass. He downed Auger-Aliassime at Wimbledon and he was fairly convincing against Johnson. He dropped a set but never panicked breaking him twice in the next two sets to finish off the match.
Cressy’s game is tailor-made for grass because his serve is excellent and he can move really well around the court for someone who is two meters tall.
A combination of slices and groundstrokes gives him enough weapons to create chances and so far it’s working for him. A top 30 debut is looming for him.
Isner v Cressy Prediction and Tip
So this will be a very close match, quite literally. I don’t expect to see many breaks and I do expect to see some tiebreaks. The match will largely depend on Isner because if he pulls up his Wimbledon level he should win. If he plays as he played in the previous two matches he’ll most likely lose.
Cressy has enough weapons to really make him uncomfortable and if the serves well he’ll be favoured. I think Cressy will continue his strong run on grass with a win here. It’s close but that’s my gut feeling.
