Brilliant Baez Powers Past Rublev
A dominant Sebastian Baez put up a power-packed performance in the semifinal on Saturday to dispatch the second seed Andrey Rublev in just an hour and 16 minutes and reach a third final of the season.
Despite paying a superior player in Rublev, Baez wasn’t intimidated but took the game to the Russian in the opening set. The Argentine didn’t face a break point in the first set, while he converted 2 of 5 to go one-set up. Baez got an early break in the second as well, but Rublev broke back in the seventh game to send the set back on serve.
The 21-year-old Argentine, however, broke again in the final game to take the match 6-2, 6-4.
With the win, Baez is now 25-16 this season. A champion in Estoril and a runner-up in Santiago, Baez is 21-9 on clay this year.
He began the Swedish Open campaign with a straight sets win over Fabio Fognini and then scored another straight sets win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. In the quarterfinal on Friday, Baez had ended Dominic Thiem’s campaign in a three-set contest.
After taking down another excellent player on Saturday, the World No. 34 will be heading into the final full of confidence.
Cerundolo Eases Past Carreno Busta
Francisco Cerundolo cruised past Pablo Carreno Busta in the semifinal on Saturday to reach a second ATP final. The Argentine, who finished runner-up in Buenos Aires last year, will now be aiming to win a maiden title on Sunday.
The World No. 39, who had not been in best of forms recently, has looked extremely good in Bastad, where he also took out the top seed and French Open finalist Casper Ruud in a three-set second round contest.
Cerundolo, who had defeated Pedro Sousa in straight sets in the opening round, had also needed just two sets to beat Aslan Karatsev on Friday.
Against Carreno Busta on Saturday, the Argentine got the solitary break of the first set in the eighth game. With the first set in the bag, Cerundolo dominated the second, racing to a 5-0 lead before Carreno Busta won two in a row to breathe some life into the contest. Cerundolo ensured there were no more hiccups as he closed out the contest in the next game for a 6-3, 6-2 victory in an hour and 17 minutes.
With the win, Cerundolo improved his season record to 16-11. His best this year included semifinal appearances in Miami and Rio. Having bettered those, can he now win his maiden title?
