Beaten by Eva Lys in the first round in Lausanne last week, Varvara Gracheva will aim to make a winning start in Hamburg.
The World No. 60, who reached the third round at Roland Garros for the second consecutive year this year, has not been in good form recently, losing the last four matches that she has played across levels. The last time she won a match was in the opening round at the WTA 125 in Valencia last month.
While she has done well in the qualifying rounds, Gracheva is 6-6 in the main draws at the tour level. She has struggled to win consecutive matches this year, with the French Open being an exception.
At the lower level, her best was a quarterfinal finish at the WTA 125 in Paris.
The 21-year-old has found the most success on clay. She has seven ITF titles from nine finals and all nine have been played on clay.

Potapova Strikes Form in Lausanne
While Gracheva has struggled recently, her first round opponent Anastasia Potapova is headed to Hamburg in good form.
Potapova knocked out Lucia Bronzetti, Irina-Camelia Begu and Jule Niemeier in the first three matches respectively before falling to Olga Danilović in straight sets in the semifinal of the Lausanne Open.
Ranked No. 79th in the world, the 21-year-old won her maiden WTA title in Istanbul this year, defeating Veronika Kudermetova in the final.
She has a 15-6 record on clay this year and will look to improve on that with an impressive showing on her Hamburg debut.
