Putintseva should have done a lot better than going down in straight sets to Aliaksandra Krunic in her previous match but to her credit she had won three in a row to reach the semifinal at that tournament in Budapest.
This included victories over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Laura Pigossi and Lesia Tsurenko, the last of which came in double quick time when her opponent retired while being down 0-6, 0-2.
Earlier, Putintseva hadn’t had the best of grass swing when she won just one of her three matches on that surface, but on clay she has been a different beast.
There has been one other semifinal appearance that came in Istanbul and then as a qualifier in Rome, Putintseva made the third round there.

Fourlis Still in Her Early Days as a Pro
While she had made her Grand Slam debut in 2017, the 22-year-old Fourlis hasn’t played in a lot of WTA competition main draws so far in her career.
Having struggled through a shoulder injury in 2020, she took a break from the sport and returned only after 17 months to start participating again.
Fourlis has done well since to get to a career-best ranking of 147th in the world – her current rank – with her best showing coming in the mixed doubles of the Australian Open earlier this year when she reached the final.
Earlier this year, Fourlis also qualified for the Wimbledon main draw for the first time, but is yet to win a match at the top level this season.

While Fourlis has looked a part as a top-150 player, it doesn’t look highly likely she could trouble a top-40 player like Putintseva on current form. Straight-set win for the Kazakh seems to be a likely result.
