Katerina Siniakova upset second seed Daria Kastkina in a three-set opening round contest in Hamburg on Monday.
The Czech broke the Russian twice to win the first set with ease. But the World No. 12 made a strong comeback in the second set. She took a 4-0 lead, got broken in the fifth game, but broke Sinakova’s serve again in the eighth game to force the decider.
Both players broke each other twice each in the middle of the third set, but it was Siniakova who got the decisive third break in the ninth game before and she served out the match in the next for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
This was the 10th win of the season for the 26-year-old who has not reached a singles quarterfinal since August last year.
On Tuesday, the World no. 96 will be looking to win consecutive main draw matches for just the second time this year. Miami is the only place where the 2022 Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles champion has won two singles matches in a row this year.

Pigossi Fights Back to Down Jani
Outplayed in the first set, Laura Pigossi fought back to oust Hungary’s Réka Luca Jani in the first round on Monday to advance at the Hamburg Open.
Jani got off to a 2-0 start in the first set, before the Brazilian got the break back, but the Hungarian ran away with the set breaking her opponent two more times.
Having won just one game in the first set, Pigossi bounced back in the second, getting the solitary break and forcing the decider.
Jani once again took a 2-0 lead, before Pigossi broke in the third to send the set back on serve. The latter broke a second time in the seventh game and then held on to the lead for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Ranked No. 120, Pigossi will be looking to reach a second WTA quarterfinal of the season. In Bogota, playing as a qualifier, she went all the way to the final, but finished runner-up to Tatjana Maria.
Currently sitting on a career-high ranking, the 27-year-old improved her season record to 18-16, across levels, on Monday.
Siniakova v Pigossi Prediction and Tip
Siniakova is the more experienced player, but has not been in good form in singles. But having beaten the second seed in the opening round she will be high on confidence. Expect the Czech to advance to the quarterfinals.
