Pablo Carreno Busta triumphed in Hamburg last year and it started a good run for him. A week later he was playing in the Olympics and he was able to secure a bronze medal for Spain. Now, a year later he’s in decent form trying to defend his Hamburg trophy.
It’s an okay year for him with a 22-16 record and 11-8 on clay. Carreno Busta plays rather well on clay and he’s had spectacular moments on the surface this year albeit poor ones as well. Last week in Bastad he lost in the quarterfinal to Francisco Cerundolo easily.
The Argentine destroyed him 6-3 6-2 but Pablo bounced back nicely in Hamburg winning his first round one match. It was a win against qualifier Luca Nardi who bowed down easily 6-2 6-1.
Hamburg suits his playstyle and he will like to continue playing like that against a very tricky opponent. Let’s see if he passes the test.

Good Start for Molcan
Alex Molcan is enjoying life on tour at the moment as the Slovakian player does not need to play qualifiers anymore for the best events. His breakout came last year when he solidified himself as a very solid player on all surfaces. Clay is the best one, but he’s capable of playing well on hard courts as well.
The year overall is rather solid with a 23-17 record and 14-8 on clay. Molcan plays aggressive tennis and his left hand can create a lot of trouble for opponents. He’s a bit streaky at times which is great when it works but poor if he doesn’t. Molcan is also very keen to battle and rarely gives up.
All of that are good qualities to have and that’s why he’s ranked in the top 50. It’s unclear how far he can with his talent but Djokovic’s coach Marian Vajda is guiding him so perhaps he’ll get even better.
Hamburg should suit him and a proper test will be taking on the defending champion in round two.
Carreno Busta v Molcan Prediction and Tip
I quite fancy Molcan here to do well but I’m wary of Carreno Busta being the defending champion. He looked superb in round one and rather well in Bastad as well.
I don’t think Pablo will bomb here but rather Molcan will have to rise to the occasion and beat him. As much as I like the way he plays I’m not fully sold he can do it. I’ll pick the safer option of backing the Spaniard for now.
