Playing Jan-Lennard Struff on German soil is not something you want to do necessarily. The German can be a very dangerous player especially when his serve is working and early on in that matchup against Khachanov it worked. The Russian was still able to come back and win that match.
It was far from easy as Khachanov squandered a break lead in the final set but rallied to win in the tiebreak. He actually saved a match point as well. It was just another solid performance from him in a year of solid performances. 2022 saw him play some of his better tennis overall but things are not yet as good as they can be.
Consistency is something he struggles with a lot. He simply can’t play a complete match from start to finish because at times he does really play well. 23-16 is very solid overall and 8-6 on clay is respectable as well.
When his serve and forehand work it’s rather tough to beat him. Can he carry over the momentum to round two against Fognini? I think he can and will.

Fognini Squeezes Past Bedene
Fabio Fognini won a match finally but it came after a tricky battle against Aljaz Bedene. The Italian is having a strange season where his play is okay but he’s still not winning matches. It seems like his commitment to tennis is not as strong as it used to be because it’s showing on the court.
He checks out of matches sometimes throwing away control of it. It happened against Bedene as well. Fognini took the opening set but then lost the 2nd set simply by not playing as serious as he could have. The Slovene player played a strong final set but Fognini finally sobered up and delivered tennis as he should have winning the match.
15-14 is not good enough for Fognini as he certainly can do much better. On clay, it’s 12-10 which is solid but once again nothing spectacular. Bastad last week was disappointing but he drew Sebastian Baez early and that was simply too much to overcome.
He might be in similar trouble here.
Khachanov v Fognini Prediction and Tip
Karen Khachanov and Fabio Fognini are two strange players. Both have serious consistency issues but the Russian is slightly better in that regard. I generally feel that he played better so far this season and he looked better in round one.
That is the reason I’m going to back him to win this match again. After all, he also leads the H2H 2-1 and has won the most recent match he played against him.
