Emil Ruusuvuroi produced the biggest shock of the first round in Hamburg after overcoming the third seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets.
It took over two hours for the contest to be settled as both players played breathless points in one of the ties of the round. Ruusuvuroi used his powerful game and stature to outmuscle Schwartzman in a baseline duel to run away victorious.
Schwartzman had won the pair’s only meeting before this week at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year, but was left to rue his missed opportunities, especially in the second set.
Ruusuvuori was in the ascendancy for pretty much the whole first set. And despite breaking early, he could not serve out the set a 5-4. Schwartzman’s recovery though was only short-lived as the Finn converted on his second set point to win 7-5.
In the second set, Schwartzman began to draw errors out of Ruusuvuori’s racket and got into a 2-1 lead. But once he was pegged back to 3-3, Ruusuvuori was in total control. Ultimately, Schwartzman’s lob was called long on match point gifting the win to Ruusuvuori.

Musetti Wins An Epic Against Lajovic
In one of the longest best-of-three matches of 2022, Lorenzo Musetti snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Dusan Lajovic in three hours of brutal baseline battle.
The Italian Next Gen star stood on the brink of early elimination at the Hamburg Open when stared at two match points on his serve in the second set. But he was able to navigate that hurdle and clinched an unlikely victory.
The margins of victory and defeat were once again very close as both players traded the first two sets in tiebreaks. Lajovic was the only one to blink in the decider after dropping his serve in the second game. Musetti would then need to show some admirable resilience when he served for the match in which he saved a pair of break-back points.
The 20-year-old snapped his four-match losing streak and won his first match since capturing the Forli Challenger at the start of June. Will he get a second in quick succession?

Musetti would have breathed a sigh of relief at getting a rare off day following that bruising encounter against Lajovic, and I think he does have an adequate variety to trouble Ruusuvuori.
