World No. 54 Nuria Parrizas Diaz showed nerves of steel as she saved two match points in the final set, before defeating American qualifier Asia Muhammad in the first round in Palermo.

Parrizas Diaz clawed her way back into the contest. She came back from a break down twice in the second set, before getting the decisive third break, which forced the deciding set.

Both exchanged an early break in the third, before Muhammad had two break points at 15-40 on the Spaniard’s serve, but the latter saved both the break points to stay alive and then won te next two games as well to win 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 58 minutes.

Grabher Ousts Wang

Lucky loser Julia Grabher overcame a tough start before knocking out China’s Wang Xinyu in the opening round.

Ranked no. 145th in the world, the Austrian had lost her second qualifying round to Leolia Jeanjean after winning her opening qualifying round against Nadia Podoroska. But she still found a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser and made the most of it on Tuesday, advancing to the second round.

The match started with six consecutive break of serves with Grabher coming back from a break down thrice. She eventually broke again in the eighth game before serving out the set in the next.

Having taken the first set, she maintained the pressure on the World no. 80, building a 5-2 lead following a double break. Wang did get a break back, but Grabher broke again thenext game to win the contest 6-3, 6-3.

Grabher, who has won eight of her nine ITF titles on clay, including one in Porto this year, will be hoping to reach her second WTaA quarterfinal this year. She had reached that far in Istanbul in April. Can she do it again?

Parrizas Diaz v Grabher Prediction and Tip

Parrizas Diaz survived a scare in the first round against a much lower ranked player. So she won’t be taking her next opponent lightly. However, the Spaniard is still expected to advance with a straight sets win over the lucky loser.
