Bernarda Pera is off to a great start in Hamburg as she beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-0, 6-4, to reach round two and improve her tally to 19-13.
This win follows her remarkable title run in Budapest last week, where, as a qualifier, she defeated the likes of Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Anna Bondar, and Aleksandra Krunic to win the first singles title of her career.
That run also propelled her in the WTA rankings – giving her a boost of 49 odd places from the #130th spot to the #81st place.
By the looks of it, the 27-year-old American is likely to maintain this trajectory. Earlier in the season, Bernarda was a runner-up in the Karlsruhe Challenger and a winner in the Melbourne Set 1 doubles with Katerina Siniakova.
It has clearly been a year of breakthroughs for Pera and considering the early exit of the number two seed Daria Kasatkina here, her path to the final is all open once again.

Zuger Knocks Out Niemeier
Joanne Zuger, age 21, hailing from Switzerland, delivered an impressive victory in the tournament by beating the rising German star Jule Niemeier 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
Starting as a qualifier, the youngster previously defeated Jesika Maleckova and Anastasia Gasanova in her bid to reach the main draw.
Currently ranking World No. 165, Zuger’s season has been largely underwhelming as she looks to build her form and experience. She arrived in Germany at the helm of just two wins in her last five tournaments – both of those coming in the first round of low-tier events like the Gaiba Challenger and ITF Charleston 2.
Such has been the year for Joanne, with her highlights coming mainly on the hard courts. She won the ITF Saint Domingo 2 in March and later was a semifinalist in Pretoria.
Pera v Zuger Prediction and Tip
Expect Pera to win this one – she has the experience and form needed to easily dismiss Zuger and reach the quarterfinal comfortably. The chances of an upset here are rather slim.
