Nuria Parrizas Diaz has enjoyed a decent campaign in Palermo thus far as she defeated Asia Muhammad (4-6, 7-5, 7-5) and the lucky loser Julia Grabher 6-2, 6-4, to reach her first WTA quarterfinal on the tour since May.
Following that elite-eight stint in Rabat, Diaz lost her first-round bouts in the French Open, Birmingham Classic, Eastbourne International, Wimbledon, and Lausanne. A good chunk of those defeats came from lower-ranked players like Petra Martic, Claire Liu, Magdalena Frech, and Leolia Jeanjean.
That said, things have not been all dull and gloom for Diaz as she did reach the semis in the Valencia Challenger amidst this rut.
Now ranking World No. 54, Nuria’s tally stands at 19-18, with her highlights coming on the hard courts in Australia and later, Monterrey, where she was a semifinalist.

Paolini Benefits from Walkover
Local favourite Jasmine Paolini will be pleased with the added rest day as she got a walkover into the quarterfinal without taking on the field.
The Italian was slated to play Shuai Zhang, but the Chinese withdrew due to fitness concerns. In the preceding round, Paolini dispatched Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-1.
Like Diaz, Jasmine has been through a slump of late as she lost her first-round fixtures in five WTA events – the most recent being the Lausanne Open. Again, she did find some reprieve in the Contrexeville Challenger, where she was a quarterfinalist.
Paolini’s current tally is 13-15 – she has had a much better run in the first half of the season. Her highlights entail a quarterfinal streak in Lyon and a round three feat in the Indian Wells Open.

Diaz is the favourite here; her superior experience is matched by 38 ITF finals to Jasmine’s 15. Statistically, she has had a much better season in 2022 and is certainly primed to reach the semis here in Palermo.
