Begu Edges Past Sorribes Tormo

Irina-Camelia Begu bounced back after losing the first set to beat fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo and advance to a first final of the season.

The World no. 45, who featured in her eighth final in Cleveland last year, is a four-time winner on the tour and will be aiming to win her first title since triumphing in Bucharest in 2017.

The sixth seed’s journey to the final in Palermo has been anything but easy, as the victory over the Spaniard in the semifinal was her third three-set victory this week. The only time she won in straight sets in the tournament was in the quarterfinal on Friday, when she defeated France’s Diane Parry 6-1, 6-3.

Begu began her campaign with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera and then rallied from a set down to beat Oceane Dodin of France 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

On Saturday, the 31-year-old Romanian conceded the first set after being broken early in the opening set. She levelled things up by getting the solitary break in the second and then surged ahead in the third, building a 2-5 lead, courtesy a double break.

The Spaniard did get a break back to make things interesting, but Begu held serve in the 10th game for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

With the win, the Romanian improved her season record to 22-13, including qualifiers. Her best this year was a semifinal finish in St. Petersburg and she also made it to the Round of 16 at the French Open.

Can she cap off a brilliant week with a fifth WTA title of her career?

Bronzetti Rallies Past Paolini

Bagelled in the opening set, Lucia Bronzetti made a stunning comeback to beat fellow Italian Jasmine Paolini and enter the first WTA final of her career.

The 23-year-old, ranked No. 78 in the world, looked to be heading out of the tournament after being completely outplayed by the World No. 61 in the opening set. Paolini had dropped just seven points on her serve and seven points on return to take a 1-0 lead.

But Bronzetti made a remarkable recovery in the second set. She seized early advantage by breaking Paolini in the very first game and then broke her again in the ninth game to force the deciding set.

Paolini got an early break to lead 1-2 in the third, but Bronzetti responded immediately to draw level. She got the decisive break in the eighth game and then served out the match in the next for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Bronzetti, who won her fifth ITF title in Chiasso, Switzerland, earlier this year, was also a semifinalist in Rabat. She also produced her best result at a WTA 1000 event this year, reaching the fourth round in Miami, although that included a third round walkover against Anna Kalinskaya.

In Palermo, Bronzetti won the opening two rounds without dropping a set, defeating China’s Xiyu Wang and Russia’s Elina Avanesyan respectively.

While the first two were straightforward wins, the next two required a fight back from her.

Just like her Saturday’s semifinal, she had lost the opening set against Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinal on Friday, but she recovered to beat the fifth seed 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Begu v Bronzetti Prediction and Tip

Both players showed their bouncebackability in the semifinals and they will be preparing to go the distance once again in the final.

Home conditions may suit the first-time finalist, but the experience of the Romanian should eventually help her win a first title in five years.
