Alize Cornet produced the biggest shock at this year’s Wimbledon when she ended Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak at the All England Club. Cornet’s victory over the Polish World No. 1 happened precisely eight years on from her sensational win over Serena Williams on the same parts.
That victory was an emotional and physical rollercoaster as the Frenchwoman barely lasted another round. She fell to Ajla Tomljanovic in the fourth round, bringing the curtain down on her grass court season. While Cornet remains unsure of her tennis future in the next year, she is now poised to break the Grand Slam appearance record at this year’s US Open.
The tenacious 32-year-old will break a tie with Ai Sugiyama for the most consecutive appearances at Grand Slam if she plays at Flushing Meadows. And the six-time WTA tour titlist will prepare for the Big Apple in earnest, starting with her third visit to the Prague Open, and her first since 2016.

Zakharova Qualifies for Prague Main Draw
Anastasia Zakharova qualified into the main draw of the Prague Open after easing past fellow 20-year-old Sinja Kraus 6-2 6-2. It follows her first-round qualifying win over Antonia Lottner which was equally in routine fashion.
Zakharova has featured mostly on the ITF circuit in her embryonic tennis years.
This season she has won three titles at that level, with the most recent of those coming on the hard courts of Tbilisi. She has compiled an outstanding 25-6 record on the ITF, easily one of the best among her peers.
However, the 20-year-old Russian has not played a main draw match at tour level this season, and lost all four matches she contested last year. While she is a player with vast, untapped potential, her matchup against Cornet may have come a little early.
Cornet v Zakharova Prediction and Tip
Experience is in Cornet’s favor, and unless she is not at the races at all, then I expect the Frenchwoman to take charge of proceedings in this encounter.
