Yannick Hanfmann has been a very good clay player for a very long time however he has played worse than poor this year. The German struggled all year long practically being unable to win two matches in a row.
It’s a shame because his game is a very polarizing one with precise serves and some beautiful strokes as well. The first time this season that he was able to win three matches in a row came last week in Gstaad. It’s not a coincidence as he plays rather well in altitude.
Similar conditions await him here and he should be able to use them to his advantage. Beating Garin last week in straight sets was pretty impressive and even the loss to Nicolas Jarry was not too terrible. He’s 17-16 on the year and 11-12 on clay courts.
If he can continue playing well this week he should be in a good position to make another deep run.

Qualifying Mastersclass from Melzer
The younger brother of Jurgen Melzer never live up to his level but it’s a pretty high level to live up to. Gerald Melzer still had a fairly solid career that is still ongoing on the challenger Tour with some rare appearances on the main Tour, mostly on clay.
This week in Kitzbuhel, the Austrian was able to play some superb tennis in the qualifiers to beat two quality opponents and move on to the main draw. It wasn’t very lucky for him giving him Hanfmann a player who is on the rise and also one who beat him twice.
Melzer will be feeling very good ahead of this one because he played so well but it will be a tough matchup. Everything he does well, Hanfmann does better.
Perhaps he can be inspired by playing at home, the crowd will certainly have his back.

I think Hanfmann will win this match simply because I really liked what he did last week. I think his form is improving, the conditions suit him and he should put in a very strong performance to beat the native Austrian.
