Keys’ Perfect Start to the Competition
Madison Keys has so far won all of her matches in Melbourne in straight sets. In the first round, she defeated the Australian wildcard Destanee Aiava after which, she dispatched Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-4. Keys eventually moved on to deliver an upset in the third round after knocking out the 12th seed Elise Mertens in straight sets.
The American ended her season last year in Zhuhai, where she played in the WTA Elite Trophy. She failed to move past the robin round – a performance that pretty much sums up most of her season.
Keys was not the most consistent player in 2018 but she did just enough to stay in the top 20. She reached the semifinal at the US Open and French Open and produced a similar feat in Charleston as well. Apart from that, she mostly lost in the early rounds.
Svitolina Continues her Winning Run
The Ukranian started her year in Brisbane where she lost in the opener to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Since arriving in Melbourne, however, she has turned that poor start around and is back to her winning ways.
In her opening matches against Viktorija Golubic and Viktoria Kuzmova, she faced barely any difficulties as she won in straight sets. In the third round, she met the Chinese ace Shuai Zhang whom she defeated 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Svitolina has been a part of the top 10 since 2017 and with time, her performance seems to be getting only better. The 24-year-old won the Italian Open last season and moved on to end the year by winning the WTA Finals in Singapore. If she carries on like this, it is only a matter of time before she becomes the World No. 1.

The two players have met only twice and both of those matches have been won by Keys. They most recently met in the fourth round of the US Open where the American won in three sets.

Both the players are heading into this fixture on the back of similar momentum. Keys holds a psychological edge over Svitolina, owing to their previous meetings on the tour. The Ukranian will start as the favourite here owing to her ranking but expect this one to be a three-set affair – one that can go either way.
