World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit is off to a brilliant start in Prague as she dispatched Ekaterine Gorgodze 6-0, 6-1 without breaking a sweat. Admittedly, there were doubts if the Estonian would be able to adapt quickly to the change in surface – but with this win, she has practically announced her comeback to the tour.
It’s been a year of ups and downs for Kontaveit. After reaching finals in big-ticket events like St. Petersburg and Doha, her form dropped as she contracted Covid-19 in April.
She fell early in Rome and Paris; those losses and lack of form kept her out of grass swing. Anett featured in just the Wimbledon Championships (round two loss to Jule Niemeier).
The road to recovery was long, but by the looks of it, the 26-year-old may very well be at the end of it. Last week, she reached the final in Hamburg (without dropping a set), where she lost to the in-form, on-a-12-match-win-streak American Bernarda Pera.

Havlickova, Home Favourite
Just last month, 17-year-old Czech Lucie Havlickova won the Junior French Open – singles and doubles – thus starting her ascension into greatness.
It is an impressive feat as she made her top-tier tour debut right here in Prague in 2021; back then, she lost to Anastasia Gasanova in the opener. Since then, she has spent all her time on the ITF circuit.
Havlickova has two doubles finals to her name there. She is ranked #787 and has a tally of 13-7 this season(12-6 only on clay).
Needless to say, Lucie will be pleased with her opening-round win over Barbora Palicová (another Czech teenager) 6-2, 7-6(5).
