Tommy Paul v Soon-woo Kwon Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between the two players but that came in the qualifiers of the Cincinnati Masters of 2021. Paul had won that in straight sets.

Paul Wins a Rare Match at Atlanta

Paul has been around for a while, having attempted to make it to the main draw of the Atlanta Open on five previous occasions. He has been successful once before, making it as far as the quarterfinal in 2017 but other than that this opening round win over Jack Sock was his first.

The American sent his fellow countryman and the much more experienced Sock packing, winning 6-1, 6-1 to reach round two. The match lasted a mere hour and four minutes.

Interestingly, Paul did drop his serve once in the encounter but it was a case of too little, too late for Sock who was already 1-6, 0-5 down at that stage.

Paul quickly recovered to break back – his sixth of the encounter – and claim the second round berth.

Can he now make it two in two against Kwon?

Kwon Goes Past Giron

Kwon wasn’t quite the favourite going into his first round match against Marcos Giron but then again he wasn’t too far behind according to bookmakers who had offered 11/10 odds for his win.

The Korean, who was on a five-match losing streak coming into the encounter, overcame those odds to register a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5 victory against his American opponent in a marathon encounter that went on for over two and a half hours.

Interestingly, both players faced five break-points in the encounter and were broken four times apiece – it was Kwon’s spritely play during the opening tie-breaker that became the difference between the two players.

Coming into this one, Kwon will know he hasn’t done too well in second round of competitions this season. In seven previous such matches this year, he has won none and against Paul, this record could continue.

Paul v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Paul is a heavy favourite and while Kwon can be expected to put up a fight, it will be the American coming through in straight sets.

Tip: Paul to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
