Fellow Austrian but ranked way lower than even Thiem’s current ranking on his return to tennis, Sebastian Ofner managed to push the former world number three to a third set. In the end, however, it was Thiem’s experience that stood out as he stormed into the second round with a three-set win.
Thiem won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in a match lasting nearly two hours.
Having dismantled Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets in the first round, Thiem was off to a flying start as he broke Ofner in the very first game of the match and then sealed the set with another break in the seventh.
It was in the second set that Ofner held on to his own and even broke Thiem in the sixth game before consolidating it and levelling the scoreline.
In a topsy-turvy start to the final set, neither player managed to hold on to his serve in the first four games before Thiem broke his opponent one last time in the eighth game to finish off the encounter.
He will need to do slightly better as the competition rises in the rest of the rounds here.

Lucky Loser Makes Hanfmann Huff & Puff
Ivan Gakhov wasn’t supposed to be playing in the main draw of this tournament, let alone feature in the second round.
And yet, he was moments away from sealing his quarterfinal berth when he took Hanfmann to a third set, with the score tied at 4-4 there.
It was Hanfmann’s experience that helped him pull through to a win as he first broke Gakhov in the ninth game of the third set – needing four break-points in that game alone – and then overcame a 15-40 deficit in the next game as he served out the match.
This two hour, 33 minute long encounter followed a 6-4, 1-1 win over Gerald Melzer after his opponent retired in the second set.
Can Hanfmann get one step closer to emulating his previous performance in Kitzbuhel, having reached the final here in 2020?
