Lucky Loser Mannarino Makes Most of the Opportunity

Adrian Mannarino found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser, but made the most of the opportunity by knocking out German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk in the opening round on Tuesday.

The Frenchman got the solitary break of the first set in the eighth game, which helped him take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second, he failed to convert five break point chances in the fifth game, and then had to save four set points in the tiebreak after the German had built a 3-6 lead. But the 34-year-old bounced back and eventually took the tiebreak and the match 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

With the win, the World No. 78 is now a win away from a fifth quarterfinal of the season. And he will be the favourite to make it to the last eight as his next round opponent is making his ATP debut and is ranked 658 places below him.

But Mannarino wasn’t suppose to be in the main draw after he lost in the second qualifying round to Taro Daniel on Sunday. Having scored a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Radu Albot in the first qualifying round, he went down to Japan’s Daniel 4-6, 3-6 in the second qualifying round. But as luck would have it, he still found a place in the main draw and is now closing in on another last eight spot.

The left-hander’s best this year was a semifinal finish in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, while he made quarterfinal exits in Montpellier, Dallas and Delray Beach.

Martin Wins on Debut

World No. 736 Andres Martin pulled off a surprise on Tuesday as he ousted World no. 69 Thanasi Kokkinakis in the  first round of the Atlanta Open.

Making his ATP debut, the American wild card saved both the break points that he faced in the match, while breaking the Aussie once in the first set and twice in the second to win the contest 6-3, 6-2.

A college player, Martin was brilliant on his serve, dropping just six of 34 points on his first serve and seven of 18 on his second.

A student at the Georgia Tech University, Martin was a finalist and a semifinalist in his two ITF events last month. Having pulled off a stunning upset in the first round, can he score another shock win on Thursday?

Mannarino v Martin Prediction and Tip

The vastly experienced Mannarino should win this with ease.  Expect him to pick up a routine win and advance for a quarterfinal meeting with either Alex de Minaur or James Duckworth.

Tip: Mannarino to win in straight sets: 1/2 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
