Annet Kontaveit is charging towards another final in 2022, after the top seed knocked out the Czech Republic’s Lucie Havlickova in the second round of the Prague Open on Thursday.
The Estonian, who dispatched Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze 6-0, 6-1 in just 48 minutes in the opening round, needed an hour and 12 minutes for her second round win.
Kontaveit dropped just four points on her serve in the opening set and didn’t face a single break point, while she converted one of the two break points that she held. The World no. 2 began the second set with a break but was broken back immediately in the next game. However, the World No. 787’s joy was short-lived as the Estonian won the last four games of the set to seal the contest 6-4, 6-3.
Kontaveit, who won four titles from seven finals last year, is aiming to reach a fourth final this year. She was a champion in St. Petersburg and finished runner-up in Qatar and Hamburg. Last week she had beaten Potapova in straight sets in the Hamburg semifinal, but fell to Bernarda Pera in the final.
If she wins on Friday, the 26-year-old will reach a fifth semifinal of the season.

Potapova Holds off Zhu
Anastasia Potapova will look to reach a third consecutive semifinal with a win on Friday. The World no. 59 was a semifinalist in Lausanne and Hamburg over the last two weeks.
Potapova’s run to the quarterfinals in Prague included back-to-back wins over Chinese players in the first two rounds.
The Russian wasn’t broken in the opening round as she raced past Wang Xinyu 6-1, 6-2. The seventh seed, however, faced some resistance from Zhu Lin in the second round on Thursday.
Potapova took a 2-0 lead in the opening set, but the Chinese player won the next four games to seize advantage. Tables turned again as Potapova fought back winning the next four games and winning the first set.
The second set was equally competitive with Zhu failing to close out the set, despite being 3-5 up. The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which saw Potapova save two set points before converting her second match point to beat the World no. 100, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).
