Djokovic v Medvedev Head to Head
They have played each other twice before this and Djokovic had won both those encounters but it hasn’t been easy for the Serbian. In the first match they played, it was at the 2017 Davis Cup where Djokovic needed to overcome the loss of the first set to down him, with Medvedev retiring from the match, injured. The second encounter at Nottingham, on grass, was slightly more straightforward with Djokovic winning 6-4, 6-4.
Minor Blip for Djokovic
Things looked like they were going very smoothly for the world number one when he had won his first two matches with consummate ease against Mitchell Krueger and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and was two sets to love up against Denis Shapovalov in his third round match.
Something, however, seemed to have affected the Djokovic focus in that third set and after leading 4-2 in that third set, he fell away to lose it 6-4. The world number one quickly regained his concentration and ran off with the fourth set and with that the match, dropping not a single game in it.
What this shows is that to beat Djokovic will need something more than just good tennis – in the kind of form that the world number one is, he would have to drastically drop his game for his Russian opponent to take any advantage of.
Best Already for Medvedev
This has been the first time that Medvedev has made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam and that should help propel his rankings towards the top 10 – his previous best was 16th late last year and he then made it to the final of the Brisbane International but lost to Kei Nishikori as a result of which he actually dropped points because of the title win in Sydney last year.
What gives Medvedev a chance is his own form this year – that Nishikori defeat aside, he has beaten Andy Murray, Milos Raonic, Tsonga, Lloyd Harris, Ryan Harrison and David Goffin in 2019 and dropped just one set doing so.
Djokovic had high praise for Medvedev and admitted to the possibility of this match going the distance for which the Serb was looking to prepare.
Novak Djokovic v Daniil Medvedev Tips & Predictions
Djokovic should be able to put the loss of that set behind him and to the surprise of many, complete a straight-set win to waltz into the quarter-final.
