Strangely, it’s not quite been Isner’s season so far and it’s been even worse in hard court competitions.
Other than a semifinal appearance in Dallas and a fourth round showing in Indian Wells, Isner has consistently lost early in such tournaments and a bit of that lack of form – and even confidence – was on show in the second round here.
Following a first round bye, Isner needed two tie-breakers across three sets to squeak past the 281st-ranked Ben Shelton in a match that last two hours and 27 minutes. He won 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (3).
There was just one break of serve in the entire match and that went to Shelton, helping him level things out after he had lost the first in a tie-breaker. Following that, 39 of the 42 first serve points were won by the server in the third set and all but one game in it was won to love or 15.

Brooksby Blasts McDonald Away
Mackenzie McDonald managed to start things off on a high in his second round match but it was all Brooksby thereafter as the world number 43 cruised to a straight-set win and seal his quarterfinal berth.
In a match lasting an hour and 33 minutes, Brooksby registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over his opponent with three breaks of serves coming his way.
Brooksby, who was broken in the very first game of the match, broke right back in the second game and then applied enough pressure on McDonald as he served at 3-4 to break him the second time.
An easy hold followed before he broke one last time in the fifth game of the second set, completing the victory off his second match-point.
McDonald had earlier cruised past Benoit Paire in the first round and starts a favourite in this one.
Isner v Brooksby Prediction and Tip
Isner’s poor form and Brooksby’s growing confidence are the reason why the latter is a favourite here. Expect Isner to push him hard though.
