Elise Mertens v Lidumila Samsonova Head to Head

Elise Mertens is the current doubles World No. 1 and singles #30. She is well-experienced and has plenty of Grand Slam experience – something that should – at least on paper – help her go deep in the Citi Open 2022.
Among her doubles exploits are finals in Doha, Miami, Den Bosch, Birmingham, and Wimbledon – and a title in the Dubai Championships.
On the singles side of things, it has been a bit slow for the 26-year-old Belgian as she arrived in Washington with a tally of 17-14. What is reassuring, however, is her hard-court results, including a fourth-round stint in the Australian Open, a quarterfinal in St. Petersburg, and round three in appearances in Doha and Indian Wells.
Most recently, Elise competed in London for the major, where she fell to Ons Jabeur in round four.
Mertens has no late-round results on the singles tour this season, but will hope to change that in the United States.

Samsonova, in a Rut
It has been a whirlwind year for the 23-year-old Russian Liudmila Samsonova. In May, she made her top 25 debut by ranking at the 25th spot. Now, she has dropped down to the #57 spot – on the back of a lacklustre spell.
Liudmila’s last prominent result was the semifinal run in Stuttgart. Since then, she has competed in six tournaments but won just one match.
Samsonova had a relatively better showing at the start of the season when she was a quarterfinalist in Adelaide and made it to the R16 in Indian Wells.
Over her career, she has also beaten the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Karolina Pliskova, Paula Badosa, and Belinda Bencic. Theoretically, Mertens should not prove that big of a problem.
Mertens v Samsonova Prediction and Tip
This match can swing either way. Mertens is the odds-on favourite owing to her pedigree, but given her inconsistency (and a proclivity to lose to lower-ranked players), Samsonova has a precedent that she can follow.
This match may see a fair bit of games.
