Khachanov on a Three-Match Losing Streak on Hard Courts

Life on a hard tennis court looked to be sorted for Khachnov for this season when he first made the final at the Adelaide International and then was a semifinalist in Doha.

Since then, however, Khachanov hasn’t had the best of times in hard court competitions. The Russian was knocked out in the second round at Dubai, and then lost both his openers in Indian Wells and Miami to crash out of the Sunshine Masters without winning an encounter.

Now, arguably, it’s been a while since that happened – with Khachanov having not played on hard courts since March – so that could be an obvious mitigating factor coming into this one.

Because Khachanov’s record on this surface is otherwise quite solid, having also won a Masters title on it. But can he shrug off the rustiness that might have come from the lack of tennis on hard courts?

Qualifiers Koepfer Shuts Out Kwon

Koepfer was a heavy favourite in both his qualifier matches in this tournament but came into his opening round match against Soon-woo Kwon at 11/10 underdog. And that’s how it looked like things could be headed when he lost the first set to his Korean opponent.

A fighting Koepfer, however, retaliated strongly and carved out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in two hours and 23 minutes to seal a rare, top-level, main draw victory.

The German had won just two matches all season before this, but none since March. Which is why a fighting win like this would be as much a sense of relief as it would give him the confidence he can return to his best – which is about 100 places higher than his career ranking.

Can he, however, test his more illustrious second round opponent?

Khachanov v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

Khachanov is returning to hard court tennis while Koepfer has been playing a lot of it – unsuccessfully if one might add. That could give Koepfer some hope but in the end, Khachanov should prove to be too difficult to surmount.

Tip: Khachanov to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
