World no. 28 Holger Rune touched new heights, winning his first ATP 250 title and also reaching his first major quarterfinal at Roland Garros. But ever since his defeat to Casper Ruud at the French Open, Rune has struggled to win even a single match, and heads to Washington on a seven-match losing streak.
Rune lost his opening matches in Halle, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, Bastad, Hamburg and Umag. The 19-year-old will be desperate for a change of fortune as he gets ready for his Washington debut. One the tour, he is yet to make an impression on hard courts, where he has an overall record of 9-10 and a season record of 2-4.
Rune has a season record of 16-17, which includes his maiden ATP title at the Munich Open, which he won after Botic van de Zandschulp retired during the final.
Rune also made it to the semifinals in Lyon and defeated Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas en route the last eight at the Paris major.

Rare Win for Paire
Facing Rune will be World no. 112 Benoit Paire, who registered his fourth win of the season on Monday, defeating Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets.
Having fallen 0-2 down in the first set, Paire made a strong comeback and never looked in trouble again, winning the 68 minute contest 7-5, 6-4.
A two-time quarterfinalist in Washington, the Frenchman improved his season record to 4-19. A three-time champion on the tour, the former top 20 player has had a very difficult time this season, and ended a seven-match losing streak in the first round. That winless run l=included a loss at the Challenger level.
Paire’s best this year came at the Australian Open, where he won the first two rounds before going down to Tsitsipas.
Having got off to a good start in Washington, he will be looking on to build on that and progress further.

Although Rune has not been in good form recently, he is the ninth seed and will be a slight favourite in this contest. Expect a three-setter with Rune advancing.
