Shapovalov Looking to Regain Lost Touch

Having struggled with consistency over the first seven months, Denis Shapovalov will be looking to regain form at the North American hard court swing.

The 22-year-old is 17-15 this season and has won just one of his last eight matches. That win came over Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round of Wimbledon. But the five set win was followed by a four-set upset by Brandon Nakashima in the second round. The defeat ended Shapovalov’s hopes of reaching another Wimbledon semifinal, following his run to the final four in 2021.

The left-handed Canadian has a 1-2 record in Washington and will be making his first appearance in the tournament since 2018.

Shapovalov has a 56.6% win record on hard courts and has produced his best results of the year on this surface, which is reflected in his 12-7 season record on hard courts.

He played an important role in Canada’s victorious run at the ATP Cup and then reached a maiden quarterfinal at the Australian Open. He also made it to the semifinals in Dubai.

He will be looking to return to his best in the North American hard court swing.

Wolf Begins With a Win

American wild card J.J. Wolf celebrated his entry into the top 100 by ousting qualifier Taro Daniel in the first round of the Washington Open on Monday.

Making his top 100 debut this week, the World No. 99 struck 32 winners, including 8 aces, and made 14 unforced errors on his way to a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over the Japanese qualifier.

The one-hour-and-26-minute contest saw Wolf convert 4 of 6 break points and save 3 of 4.

Following the win, the 23-year-old improved his tour-level record to 5-4 in 2022.

Wolf, who reached three Challenger semifinals this year, is making his Washington Open debut this year. Last year he had failed to go past the qualifying rounds. How far can he go this year?
