Daniil Medvedev v Rinky Hijikata Head to Head
World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev has not played Rinky Hijikata before this.

Medvedev Continues to Search for First ATP Title
Daniil Medvedev is the current world No. 1, but on the eve of the tournament in Los Cabos (where he is set to make his tournament bow on Wednesday), claims he is not in the driver’s seat in the race to end the year there.
Medvedev is facing some serious pressure from Zverev, and Rafael Nadal who has won two Grand Slams this season. And with the Russian defending 1000 points in Canada next week, there will be little margin for error from now on.
Medvedev has not particularly had a productive year by his own lofty standards despite reaching the Australian Open final in January. Defeat to Nadal after blowing a two-sets-to-love lead in Melbourne left a bitter taste and has clearly shaken his confidence a little.
Add to the fact the current tension back at home which is causing real mental havoc to Russian athletes, who were banned from competing at this year’s Wimbledon, and you would probably feel sorry for Medvedev who enters the Los Cabos tournament without a title win this year.
As remarkably as that sounds, Medvedev should probably end his title drought this week, but given the kind of strange season he has had, it is not a guarantee.

Hijikata Scores First ATP Win
Rinky Hijikata did not envisage he would get his first ATP win this week, but the 21-year-old Australian was given perhaps the easiest tie of the round against 17-year-old Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez.
Hijikata outplayed the Mexican wild card, and after romping to a 6-3 4-0 lead, his opponent was forced to retire due to injury, giving him a free ticket into Wednesday’s clash against the top seed Medvedev.
The Syndey native has worked tirelessly for the best part of six months to get to this stage and entered the Los Cabos tournament with a career-high ranking. Should he pull off an unlikely win over the world No. 1, he could potentially be looking to break the top 200 for the first time.
Hijikata’s experience at this level is certainly against him. He has only ever played two main draw matches at tour level prior to this week, losing both times. He has won a couple of ITF titles this year, but there is very little to suggest he may pull off an upset win.
Medvedev v Hijikata Prediction and Tip
Medvedev has not particularly played great tennis despite taking over the mantle as tennis’ top dog. But he has a lot to lose this week and the next, and I fully expect him to go all guns blazing in Los Cabos.
