Thanasi Kokkinakis v Steve Johnson Head to Head
This will be the first time these two players will be facing off in a competitive match at the highest level. Johnson had once defeated Kokkinakis in the qualifiers of the 2013 Australian Open, with the match going 17-15 in the final set.

In what could have turned out to be a one-sided encounter, the seventh seed Kokkinakis needed three sets to get past Fernando Verdasco in his opening round match to proceed to round two.
Kokkinakis had a chance to serve out the match in the second set, only to drop his serve and lose it in a tie-breaker. He came back, however, to complete an easy win in the final set to complete the 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2 win.
A finalist in Washington way back in 2017, Kokkinakis had entered this tournament on the back of a first round exit at Atlanta last week. His performances in hard court competitions this year, however, have been solid overall, with a maiden ATP title win coming in Adelaide and a fourth round appearance at Miami to follow.
He should have the confidence and form to take down Johnson.

Johnson Eases Past Villanueva
It was expected to be a straightforward encounter for Johnson and that’s exactly how it turned out to be for the American against the lucky loser Gonzalo Villanueva.
Johnson, ranked 92nd in the world at the moment, registered a 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory over Villanueva in a match lasting an hour and 39 minutes.
Villanueva did draw the first blood when he went 2-0 up in the first set but from there on it was one-way traffic as Johnson drew level in the fourth game with a break of serve. He then drove home the early advantage in the tie-breaker that followed to take a one-set lead.
In the second, Johnson broke Villanueva in the fifth game, saved a couple of break-points on his own serve before carving out the win.
This follows a first round loss at the Atlanta Open last week for Johnson whose best showing in a hard court competition this year was the third round appearance at Indian Wells Masters. Can he win back to back matches for just the third time in 2022?
Kokkinakis v Johnson Prediction and Tip
Kokkinakis will start off a favourite in this one and while Johnson could pose a question – or three – we think the Aussie should be able to make it through. A hard-fought but straight-set win could be the nature of this encounter.
