Berankis Beats French Seed

It has been a difficult few months for the Lithuanian number one, who was once ranked as high as fifty in the world, but has seen his standing gradually drift down after a sequence of disappointing results.

His best result of the year on the main tour was back in February, when he came through two rounds of qualifying to make the third round in Dubai.

Since then, his biggest achievement was perhaps taking a set of Rafael Nadal in his second round defeat at Wimbledon.

However, having failed to get beyond the first round in qualifying in Atlanta last week, he made a winning start to his campaign in Mexico, with a straight sets defeat of the number nine seed, Quentin Halys of France, the world number 73.

It was a close fought match. One break apiece in the first set meant that a tie-break decider was needed, which Berankis seized for the loss of just one point. Again they swapped breaks in the second set but, this time, serving to stay in the match, Halys offered a match point to the Lithuanian, which was gratefully accepted.

Bagnis Cruises Past American

Bagnis is primarily known as a clay court player, but he made an encouraging start to this tournament with a comprehensive victory over the American Ernesto Escodedo, currently ranked 166 in the world.

The Argentine began badly though, and was broken in the opening service game of the game, only to immediately respond with a  break of his own.

He then wrested control of the first set with a  further break, and was able to consolidate that to establish an advantage.

Two consecutive breaks of serve put him firmly in control at the start of the second set. Escobedo briefly threatened a comeback when he had two break pints of his own, but he could not take either of them, and his fate was effectively sealed.

For good measure Bagnis broke him one more time, though.

Berankis v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Although Bagnis began his campaign in confident style, in theory, at least, Berankis is the better hard court player. He will start the marginal favourite.

Tip: Berankis to win: 7/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
