Kecmanovic Routs Thompson

Miomir Kecmanovic’s excellent season got even better as the Serb reached a seventh quarterfinal of the season with a straight sets drubbing of Jordan Thompson in the second round of the Los Cabos Open.

The fourth seed, playing for the first time since his third round defeat at Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic, needed just an hour and 13 minutes to dispatch the Aussie 6-4, 6-2.

Kecmanovic did not face a single break point in the match and dropped just seven points on his first serve and five points on his second. He was solid on return as well, breaking Thompson once in the first and twice in a one-sided second set.

The World No. 38 has looked at his best this season and Wednesday’s win improved his season record to 28-15. He topped his previous best results in all three of the Grand Slams this year, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and the third round in the other two.

The 2020 Kitzbuhel champion was also a quarterfinalist in both Indian Wells and Miami, and also made the last eight in Rio, Santiago, Belgrade and Munich.

Only once was he able to go past the quarterfinals though and that was in Munich, where he lost in the semifinals. Can he reach a second semifinal of the season with a win on Thursday?

Nakashima Sends Purcell Packing

Just like Kecmanovic, Brandon Nakashima, too, is having a vey good season and it got even better for the 20-year-old on Wednesday, when he reached the quarterfinals in Los Cabos with a straight sets win over Australia’s Max Purcell.

The World no. 61, who announced his arrival on the tour last year by reaching the final in Los Cabos, needed an hour and 17 minutes to beat the Australian 6-3, 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday.

Nakashima won 74% points on the back of his first serve, saved 4 of 5 break points and converted 4 of 7 to advance to a second straight quarterfinal. Last week, he had made it to the quarterfinals in Atlanta — another tournament where he had reached the final last year.

The 20-year-old, who produced his best Grand Slam result at Wimbledon this year, by reaching the fourth round, had begun this year’s Los Cabos campaign with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win over Japan’s Kaichi Uchida.

With the two wins he has improved his season record to 19-12. He will be playing in his fourth quarterfinal of the season on Thursday and a win could lift him into the first semifinal of 2022.

Kecmanovic v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Nakashima was the finalist here on his debut last year and he is in good form as well. But he may struggled against the fourth seed in the quarterfinals. Kecmanovic is in excellent form and will hold slight edge against the American.
