Number nine seed Holger Rune enjoyed a comfortable start in Washington as she beat Benoit Paire in his second-round opener with 6-3, 6-2.
That win has set the tone for the 19-year-old’s campaign in the Citi Open, but things are likely to get complicated for him as he proceeds. His season so far stands at 16-17, although he is ranked World No. 28 – just one place shy of his career-best ranking.
The highlights of his season came on clay courts – which is not particularly surprising since Holger is somewhat of a clay specialist. He won his first ATP title in Munich and later reached the semis in Lyon and the quarterfinal in French Open. In these tournaments, he beat a few big names like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, and Alexander Zverev.
These results, however, were followed by a five-match losing streak to lower-ranked players on the tour.

Wolf Stuns Shapovalov
Jeffrey John Wolf, playing with a wildcard in the competition, just upset the number six seed Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 to reach round three. In the opening match, he stunned Taro Daniel 6-2, 6-3.
The 23-year-old is currently ranked World No. 99 and has spent the bulk of his year competing in Challenger events. While J.J. hasn’t seen much success there, he was still consistent enough to reach the late stages in the hard-court events of Phoenix, Orlando, and Rome.
His last ATP event ,was in Atlanta where he retired against Donald Young in the qualifying opener after battling for three sets.
Rune v Wolf Prediction and Tip
Rune may be the odds-on favourite, but Wolf has the advantage of playing at home. He also seems to be more comfortable on hard courts, and with Rune’s unpredictable form and consistency, the American has the precedent for winning this match.
